Our group of veterans who live in Maine have been assisting our Afghan partners and allies since the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban and the chaotic non-combatant evacuation operation (NEO) of August 2021. During the Kabul NEO many members of our organization assisted - by phone, text, WhatsApp, Signal, and other means - at-risk Afghans in gaining entrance to the Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) in Kabul and boarding military evacuation flights that took them to U.S. military bases in the Middle East, and then to the United States. Our work in the relocation of Afghans continued after August 2021 and continues to this day. We assist in the preparation and documentation efforts of Afghans who have submitted applications for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV). Some of the Afghans we are helping have found their way to Maine . . . and we are helping them in the resettlement process. In addition, our organization is taking an advocacy role on behalf of the Afghans. Some of this effort is at the local and state level. Much of our advocacy work is at the national level. For instance, we are actively engaged with Maine’s Congressional delegation, encouraging them to support the Afghan Adjustment Act.
